Despite the iconic nature of the Manhattan skyline, there are only four places where the public can experience this view, and that comes at an entry fee: the Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center, ONE World Trade Center, and Edge at Hudson Yards. All other views from above are the private privilege of the owners of the most luxurious apartments.
Andi Schmied, in her exhibition, offers insights into this elite world, presenting surreal strategies to persuade real estate agents and allowing readers to bypass the gatekeepers of these luxury properties. Visitors will see the sunset from Trump Tower, views from the private club of the tallest residential building on the planet, and showcases of the most luxurious materials, such as Siberian marble used for bathtubs overlooking the Statue of Liberty.
The exhibition opening will take place on Thursday, October 7, 2021, at 19:00 at the Brno Architecture Gallery. The exhibition will run until November 26, 2021, and will be accessible from Wednesday to Sunday from 14:00 to 19:00. The gallery will offer the publication "Private Views. A High-Rise Panorama of Manhattan." As part of the accompanying program, there will be a guided tour of the exhibition with the author Andi Schmied and lectures by researchers on the topic of housing financialization.
Andi Schmied is a Hungarian visual artist and architect. Her work focuses on places that do not follow conventional logic but remain part of our cityscape. They include areas that have significantly deviated from their originally planned function (Jing Jin City), utopian architecture (Noguchi Town), or privileged spaces (Private Views). Schmied studied architecture at University College London and has exhibited in several institutions in Europe, the USA, and Asia. The book "Private Views. A High-Rise Panorama of Manhattan," published by the Prague gallery VI PER, was awarded as the Most Beautiful Czech Book of the Year 2020 in the Art category. http://andischmied.com/
