Mladi Rod Kindergarten

The architect Stanko Kristl designed the Mladi rod day-care unit within a residential development in the form of three pavilions over a grassy surface. Each pavilion was designed as an automous unit composed of several playrooms arranged in a circular form. The units are connected by an oblong wing containing service quarters and management offices. The wing, which is partially submerged undeground, is effectively separated from the children's space. The design, which resembles the sail of a windmill, was inspired by the idea of opening out to the sun and garden and by the belief that a child's notion of shelter resides in organic forms. The visually and technologically perfected construction of visible concrete belongs to the school known as architectural brutalism.
