On the occasion of the International Day of Play (International Day of Play is celebrated annually on June 11), a play pavilion has been opened, designed by British architect Sir Peter Cook in collaboration with the Danish company Lego. The eighty-eight-year-old co-founder of the visionary studio Archigram has been fortunate to make a living doing what he enjoys most. Throughout his career, he has maintained a playful nature, which he would now like to encourage in the younger generation through his latest creation. Peter Cook describes his design as a "theater or observatory." The unusual shape and color attract attention from afar. The circular pavilion situated on a meadow next to the Serpentine gallery in London is not entirely made of small bricks. The supporting structure consists of curved walls clad in shiny orange metal, and the central space is covered by a geodesic dome topped with a translucent orange film. Plastic bricks on the outer shell create a colorful haptic installation. The undulating walls of the pavilion resemble a mountain range or waves, but most importantly, they allow glimpses inside, where alongside a trio of giant totems made from small Lego bricks, there are several wooden tables, blue containers with building sets, and green game boards on the walls that you can decorate with bricks according to your own taste. The pavilion is free to access for both young and old visitors from 10 AM to 6 PM (and until 7 PM on weekends). Upon leaving the pavilion, you can use one of two large openings, the "mouse hole" or the yellow slide. Peter Cook adds about his design: “A child can slide down the slide, another can crawl through the hole in the wall, but there are also standard entrances. Another opening in the shape of a mouth represents a speaker, artist, or singer who entertains the listeners. Playing encourages us and allows us to explore and joyously look forward to the interface between whimsy, speculation, and unbridled fun.” The play pavilion will be open in Kensington Gardens until August 10, 2025.
