House in the Clouds

House in the Clouds
At the beginning, there was a sloped plot towering above the valley of a Central Bohemian village. And given that views were priority number one, we chose the form of a single-story building set into a steep slope open towards beautiful views.
We wanted to create an atrium house that would combine two, or rather three worlds. The first world is the inner atrium. It is a world unto itself, creating an intimate space sheltered from the eyes of neighbors.
The second world is the views. The house is built around them, with each living space opening up to views of the village.
And the third world is the one beneath the house. A grounded garden with covered seating directly under the house, nicely sheltered from the wind.

The different worlds are also reflected in the interior. We like to work with the graduation of space. From the spacious living area, we enter a dim, narrow hallway, from where we access the rooms. During this journey, a transformation occurs – from the dark space, we enter into an open space – naturally leading to a calming effect, concentration, and relaxation.

Atrium
The atrium creates a buffer zone that, although very open, primarily serves to protect the residents from views from the street and neighbors. This is beautifully illustrated by the formulation of the mass at the entrance. The open passage leading to the covered parking area ends with a solid wall. It is followed by an enclosed mass of the outdoor storage that, on the contrary, mirrors the open view into the atrium. Because of this, we could afford to open both bathrooms towards the atrium without fearing prying eyes from passersby. And the house does not appear impregnable from the street.

Water
Another important aspect of the design was working with water. At the beginning was the idea of water circulating throughout the house. From the water surface in the upper part of the atrium, through the staircase down to the pond in the lower part of the garden. Although in realization, both of these circuits were implemented so that they function independently of each other, the illusion of water flowing through both outdoor spaces has been preserved.
