Biography
Ray Kappe was an American architect and educator who co-founded a private architecture school, SCI-Arc, in Los Angeles in 1972.
He came from a family of Romanian immigrants and attended high school in Los Angeles. In 1945, he began studying at the University of California but was soon drafted into the engineering corps of the U.S. Army, where he served as an instructor in topographic surveying. After being discharged from the army, he attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned a bachelor's degree in 1951. From 1954, he operated his own architectural practice. In 1968, he became a partner in the Kahn Kappe Lotery Boccato studio, which was renamed Kappe Lotery Boccato in 1978. In 1985, he established his own firm, Kappe Architects Planners. Throughout his life, he focused on sustainability and the prefabrication of residential homes. All his drawings, models, and documents are housed in the Getty Research Institute.
