Brno – Dozens of people came today to try out the newly modified section of Kpt. Jaroš Street in Brno. Although the official opening was scheduled for 14:00, people began gathering at the site in the morning, taking advantage of the seating with refreshments and listening to music from guest DJs. The Revitalization of Jaroška project was prepared by the Office of the Architect of the City of Brno (KAMB) and is currently planned for three years.

The project involved modifications to a 35-meter long section of Kpt. Jaroš Street at the point where it borders Milady Horákové Street. The historical avenue from the 19th century, with its mature linden alley, previously had only a few benches.

"Unfortunately, the promenade under the linden alley has become one large parking lot over the past decades, and there was a risk of further deterioration. We thus built upon the city project for a bicycle path along the alley by developing a study aimed at demonstrating that even transportation solutions can be cultivated when they respect the values built by our ancestors and build upon them. At the same time, we want to preserve the character of the street with the mature avenue and improve the conditions for the trees," stated Šárka Reichmannová from KAMB.

A new pedestrian zone was created in place of 30 parking spaces, which is about seven percent of the spaces on the street. In the middle of the street between the linden trees, a wooden platform was created not only for sitting but also to protect the trees from excessive soil compaction, which prevents water from reaching their roots.

The modifications were complemented by greenery planting where possible and the addition of planted flower boxes in areas where planting was not feasible.

"The goal was to create a space for relaxation, leisure activities, and refreshments, in collaboration with local businesses. A new living space has been added, expanding the terraces of the businesses, and creating an area for sitting and play. It will be possible to hold markets, social or cultural events here. All changes will be subject to ongoing evaluation and taken into account in the planned reconstruction of the entire street," added Reichmannová.
