Brno - A year after the start of construction of the Janáček Cultural Center in Brno, the drilled pile wall and the high and low voltage relocations are completed in the gap between Veselá and Besední streets. Workers have excavated 20 percent of the construction pit and are now focusing on strengthening the structures of the first and third underground floors of the main concert hall building. Due to the discovery of the foundations of a 13th-century burgher house, they cannot proceed with the work as planned. However, the goal is to minimize or avoid delays in the project. This was stated today by the spokesperson of the Brno City Hall, Filip Poňuchálek.
The construction of the six-story building costing 2.3 billion crowns excluding tax, which will house the Brno Philharmonic, began last February. Currently, workers are preparing for anchor drilling, and rescue archaeological research is also ongoing. Due to this, the number of activities on the construction site is limited. It is still unclear what will be done with the medieval foundations. At the end of last year, the city announced that it would work with archaeologists and heritage experts to find a way to preserve the historical value of the find.
"The previously mentioned 3D scan of the discovered house is finished and currently the investor, heritage experts, and designers are discussing the next steps. Once a final decision is made, the city will discuss possible changes to the schedule and work procedures with the contractor. The aim will be to ensure that no delays occur, or that they are kept to a minimum," said Poňuchálek.
This year, workers are expected to move to the site of the future technology center. In addition to excavating the construction pit, they will be drilling anchors, piles, and building walls of sprayed concrete. The construction of monolithic parts of the hall will also begin. Additionally, the city continues with the selection of a supplier for the organs for the new hall. Four interested parties have already applied for the contract, which has an estimated value of 80 million crowns excluding VAT. The completion of the center is planned for next year, with the opening scheduled for 2028.
