The inadequate space in front of the main entrance to the heavily visited Covered Swimming Pool in Ostrava-Poruba is undergoing a significant transformation that will greatly enhance its aesthetic level. The area, managed by the municipal company SAREZA, is expected to be completed in October 2025 with a reconstructed forecourt featuring architectural elements reminiscent of blue water waves.

The revitalization is taking place while the pool remains operational and must therefore be carried out in stages. In addition to making the area more attractive, it will also expand the capacity of parking spaces by 22. These will serve, among other things, to ensure accessibility to the covered pool during the summer months when its outdoor section is also open. The construction work will involve adjustments to the existing surfaces of the entrance corridors, pedestrian access paths on sidewalks, hardened areas, and the entrance ramp.

A characteristic element of the forecourt, the sculpture ‘Water and Us’ by Evžen Scholler, will be relocated and embedded in new terraces. Below it, a shallow depression will be created to hold water, forming a water feature that will circulate around the sculpture. The revitalized area is intended to evoke the feeling of a space between rising waves, which will be reinforced by the blue color of the entire design. The deepest areas will be dark, while the highest points will be lighter.

The current progress of the revitalization work was summarized by Ostrava Mayor Jan Dohnal: "New networks have been built, specifically a new drainage network for the newly constructed areas, a circulation loop for the renewed water feature 'Water and Us', and the re-coupling of rainwater from the covered pool facility. Most of the earthworks are already complete, as well as the foundation structures for the new staircases. The underlying layers for the future hardened areas made of concrete structures are being finalized."

To complete the project, the process of gradual concrete pouring for individual areas will begin after reinforcement. These will be divided into different elevation levels, more precisely into expansion units. First, the upper slab will be poured, followed by the gradual and demanding concrete pouring of the stair steps after the construction of relief arch formwork. This will be followed by the expansion of the parking lot, creating a small water area – a puddle – to which water from the water feature will be diverted, and subsequently pouring the lower area around the water feature while connecting with the surroundings.

Only then will the new composition of the entrance ramp and access to the main entrance of the building, including many finishing works, come into play. These include fine terrain adjustments, landscaping, reinstallation of the water feature sculpture, installation of railings with lighting for the staircases and ramp, and the supply and installation of furniture.

“As the statutory city of Ostrava, we pay a lot of attention and substantial resources to the modernization of various sports facilities. Quality sports infrastructure is very important to us. The covered pool in Ostrava-Poruba is among the well-known, popular, and sought-after places. I am very pleased that an attractive space will be created in front of the covered pool, which will also be interesting from an architectural point of view.”

The transformation of the forecourt will cost approximately 20 million crowns, with about 30% of the total amount currently spent. The project is authored by David Kotek from the architectural studio Projektstudio, and the contractor is IMOS Brno. The statutory city of Ostrava will contribute eight million crowns from its budget to the revitalization. The municipal company SAREZA will thus cover the sum of 12 million.
