Hrotovice – On the site of the demolished old Sokol hall, the town of Hrotovice has built a community center. The hall for 330 people can host theater and film performances, and the building can also hold exhibitions. The municipal library has relocated there, and athletes have gained facilities as they use the neighboring sports field. For the construction, which cost more than 140 million crowns, the town received a grant of 70 million crowns. Another grant was used for improvements to the surrounding area. This was stated by Mayor Hana Škodová (SNK) at today's opening of the community center.
At the beginning of the ceremony, a nearly three-meter metal sculpture with outstretched wings was unveiled at the entrance, created by artistic blacksmith Pavel Tasovský. He noted that the main inspiration was the ancient goddess of victory, Nike. "It represents victory over chaos, fear, and death," he said.
According to the mayor, today’s event followed nine years of effort. The town acquired the Sokol hall along with the adjacent land from TJ Sokol in 2017. According to expert assessments, it was in such a condition that it was not worth repairing. It was not a classic Sokol building like in other towns. "It was a wooden German military hangar that was brought to Hrotovice after the war in 1950," Škodová said.
Initially, the town received a grant for a multipurpose sports facility, which has served the school and the public since September 2021. It managed to secure funding from the Ministry of Industry and Trade at the end of 2023 for the new building, on the condition that the construction will be completed in 2025. For improvements to the spacious area of the community center, it drew from grant programs an additional 31 million crowns. There is space for gatherings and a small amphitheater. The local government is financing its share of these constructions through a loan.
The community center is expected to be energy self-sufficient. "We have photovoltaics on the roof, a green roof," said Deputy Mayor Bohuslav Seitl (independent). He added that theaters and concerts are already planned for the hall. During today’s opening program, all seats were filled.
Before, the municipal library was in Hrotovice in the building of the elementary art school. The freed-up space will be used by the school for a dance hall, the mayor stated.
The community center is meant to serve not only the locals but also people from the surrounding area. The population will increase in the region once construction begins in a few years on two new blocks near the Dukovany power plant, which is about seven kilometers away. Hrotovice has approximately 1,800 inhabitants.
