Emil Přikryl

Prague - On December 28, architect Emil Přikryl will celebrate his eightieth birthday, known especially for his work in Loun, where he converted the former brewery into the Benedict Rejt Gallery. The gallery is often referred to as the most significant building of the post-revolutionary era. Přikryl also built a villa for director Věra Chytilová in Prague's Troja, and his competition proposal for the reconstruction of the Old Town Hall in 1987 garnered attention from experts. According to specialists, Přikryl has fundamentally influenced the thinking of a young generation of architects, and most of his graduates are among the leading Czech creators.

Emil Přikryl was born on December 28, 1945, in Bílovec in Moravia, into a family of a painter and a visual arts teacher. He studied at the Faculty of Architecture at the Czech Technical University in Prague and at the Academy of Fine Arts under František Cubr. In 1969, he became a member of the Liberec SIAL School, an association of young creative architects led by Karel Hubáček, the author of the transmitter on Ještěd Mountain. In the 1980s, Přikryl focused primarily on exhibition concepts, exhibiting both at home and abroad. Since 1989, he has been dedicated to teaching future architects. In 1991, he was appointed professor at the Academy of Fine Arts.

Přikryl was awarded the honor of the Czech Chamber of Architects for the year 2009. Since 2000, the ČKA has been awarding this honor to a significant personality in the field whose work and moral credit have made a substantial mark in the modern history of Czech architecture. "Through his graduates, Emil Přikryl continues to help push the boundaries of the quality of architectural creation in the Czech Republic. He works more as an experimenter, constantly exploring the meaning and essence of architecture," the jury wrote at the time of the award.
