CITY FOR PEDESTRIANS

which will take place
on Wednesday, February 13, 2008, in Brno
on Thursday, February 14, 2008, in Prague
  • Why and how to adapt current cities to the needs of pedestrians?
  • How to make walking easier in today’s cities?
  • What can be done to make walking part of a sustainable mobility system?
Leading world experts from the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Austria will present their answers to these questions:

Rob Methorst - Walking as the Essence of the City

A Dutch worker from the Ministry of Transport and chair of the International Committee on Pedestrian Quality Needs will present the history of the walking movement and the relationship of walking to mobility and sustainability.

Rodney Tolley - The Century of Pedestrians
Director of WALK 21, an international platform of experts for pedestrian transport, advisor to the UK government on pedestrian issues, staff member of Staffordshire University, consultant.

Gabriele Steinbach - Promoting Pedestrians in Vienna
Coordinator for pedestrian transport at the Vienna Municipal Department will present activities and procedures to support pedestrian transport in the Austrian capital.

The next part will present the state of pedestrian transport support in the Czech Republic
Walking in Czech Cities
Representatives of Brno, Prague, and Plzeň will provide information on the state of pedestrian transport support in these cities. Furthermore, research from the Transport Research Centre focusing on the needs of senior pedestrians will be presented.

An afternoon discussion meeting will be prepared for a limited number of interested participants
Round Table with Foreign Experts
You will have the opportunity to discuss principles of street space organization, practical measures, real limitations and challenges of pedestrian transport, and other topics with foreign guests.
