“City” interests researchers from various fields, viewed from a multitude of perspectives, usually in connection with the understanding of the life of the society that inhabits it or relates to it in some other way. The term “city”, seemingly obvious, is however often used by different disciplines as well as individual researchers in varying meanings. At times it refers to the material environment, more or less charged with symbolic meanings, while at other times it indicates an administrative unit, a way of life, “cultural form,” “community,” or is defined as a counterpart to the countryside.
The meeting should provide a space for discussion on the concept of the city and its various definitions. The discussion about what exactly a city is should be conducted with regard to the currently reflected questions by various disciplines regarding the “transformations of cities,” existing inequalities, but also the cohesion formed based on perceived belonging to a locality.
The conference is open to those interested from the fields of architecture, social and cultural anthropology, human and social geography, environmental studies, sociology, urbanism, and other related disciplines. Because our goal is to stimulate discussion across these fields, we do not anticipate breaking it into sections. The format of contributions can also be adjusted to this goal, focusing on the formulation of basic theses and prompts for discussion.
At the conference, we welcome (not only) the following topics for contributions:
1, city and social life
2, city as a physical structure
3, searching for the boundaries of the city and boundaries within the city
4, social (symbolic) exclusion and inclusion
5, public and private spaces
6, shaping cities (actors and their positions)
7, the future of the city and the concept of sustainability
8, urban jungle

The meeting will take place November 30 - December 1, 2007 in the premises of the Faculty of Social Studies at Masaryk University (Joštova 10, Brno). Abstracts along with the application (available at ivris.fss.muni.cz) should be sent please by October 15, 2007 (extended deadline) to konference_mesto@fss.muni.cz. The length of the abstract should not exceed 250 words, and the length of contributions at the conference will be about 20 minutes. If you are interested in attending the conference without submitting a contribution, please register by November 1, 2007.
After the conference, a peer-reviewed proceedings will be published. We will expect the text of the contribution by November 15.
The conference fee is 250 CZK for students, 350 CZK for other interested parties. For any further information, please also contact us at the email konference_mesto@fss.muni.cz.
