Galerie VI warmly invites you to the first lecture in the In Focus: Berlin series. The event will take place on Tuesday, April 19, 2022, at 19:00.
What future are we building? Architecture of conflicting interests
The housing shortage in Berlin is one of many examples that illustrates the current polarization and simultaneously insufficiently complex discussion on this topic. Instead of strategically planning for the long term to address key issues, competing parties are gearing up for battle under the slogans "expropriate!" versus "build more and faster!"
Berlin is a very specific case; however, the housing shortage and real estate market development are in fact systemic and far-reaching problems. More than half of the residents of German cities pay over 30% of their income on housing – and this is not only true for Germany. The climate crisis and growing social inequality present even greater challenges for us as a society. The housing question (Wohnungsfrage) is not only returning but is also an urgent issue. However, since construction is responsible for approximately 40% of CO2 emissions, we cannot simply build more. We must carefully assess what we truly need and what we actually already have.
What aspects can urban planners address and take as their own to ensure they are not overlooked? And what future are we actually building here?
Angelika Hinterbrandner works as an editor, project manager, and freelance strategist – primarily, but not exclusively, in the field of architecture. She studied architecture at the Technical University of Graz and at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She is currently collaborating with Brandlhuber+/bplus.xyz on the question "who is the architect?" in the context of commodification of space and new models of architectural creation. Within the Contextur project, she reflects on the possibilities and responsibilities of future architects. Since 2021, she has been part of Arno Brandlhuber's Department of Architecture and Design at ETH Zurich. At the same time, she is studying Leadership Digital Innovation at the University of the Arts in Berlin.
The series is prepared by Miroslav Pazdera.
The event takes place as part of the FEM2:2 series. Supported by the Franco-German Cultural Fund and the State Culture Fund.
