On Wednesday, February 27, 2019, at 7:00 PM, a presentation of the A&U magazine dedicated to architectural design in the digital age will take place at the VI PER gallery in Karlín, featuring Imro Vaško, Shota Tsikoliya, and Henrieta Moravčíková.

The current issue of the magazine Architecture & Urbanism maps the influence of computational technologies and the digitization of architectural tools on contemporary architectural practice and research (not only) in Central Europe. The editors of the issue, Imro Vaško and Shota Tsikoliya, present a spectrum of research and projects that not only focus on the possibilities of using computational tools but could not have emerged without them, or would at least look completely different. In a discussion with the editor-in-chief of the magazine, Henrieta Moravčíková, they will attempt to clarify how the contemporary conception of the world as an open dynamic system is changing architectural thinking. They will touch on questions such as what open systems, soft systems, generative processes, or bottom-up methods signify in today's architectural research and practice, and what their potential is for expanding knowledge and addressing real challenges in our world.

Guests:
Imro Vaško leads studio A III at the AAAD in Prague. After returning from a Fulbright scholarship at Yale University, he established the Laboratory of Architecture at the VŠVU in Bratislava. He has served as a visiting professor at the Rhode Island School of Design. He has lectured and been a critic at Columbia University, Pratt Institute, RICE, Cornell University, CCNY, Universität für angewandte Kunst, and the Akademie der bildenden Künste in Vienna. He co-organized international architectural events with Daniel Libeskind, Greg Lynn, Monika Mitášová, Marian Zervan, and many others. He collaborated with Jan Tabor and Wolf D. Prix on the WI:BRA project. He focuses on conceptual and visionary architecture, urbanism, installations, and engages with trends in Central European architecture and parallel modernism.

Shota Tsikoliya serves as an assistant professor in studio A III and lectures a cycle on Science, Engineering Technology in Global Architectural Design within the international CIEE program. He studied at the University of Stuttgart and the Prague College of Applied Arts. He is a co-founder of the architectural studio Collarch. He leads and co-organizes various workshops focused on innovative technologies in architecture. He is an editor of the recently published publication of the Academic Platform of Computational Design, where he compares the results of MOLAB studies from the FA CTU and A III at AAAD with the research platforms of European architectural schools.

Henrieta Moravčíková is the editor-in-chief of the magazine Architecture & Urbanism, head of the Department of Architecture at the Historical Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Bratislava. She serves as a professor of the history and theory of architecture at the Faculty of Architecture at STU in Bratislava. She is the chairwoman of the Slovak working group DOCOMOMO, concerned with the research and protection of the heritage of the modern movement. She is the author of several book and magazine publications published both domestically and abroad, such as Architecture of Slovakia in the 20th Century, Bratislava: Atlas of Housing Estates, and Architect Friedrich Weinwurm. She engages in the theory, history, and criticism of architecture.

The magazine Architecture & Urbanism is the only scientific magazine in the Czech Republic and Slovakia registered in the prestigious scientific database Current Contents. It focuses on the theory, history, philosophy, and culture of architecture and urbanism in the 20th and 21st centuries. It addresses the relationship of architecture and urbanism to art, technology, and the environment. It publishes results from sociology and psychology of architecture and urbanism, social ecology, results of research from the field of environmental technology, and other disciplines that contribute to the development of theoretical knowledge in architecture and urbanism. It publishes contributions on the teaching of architecture and urbanism, reviews of scholarly books, as well as information and reports on significant scientific and artistic events. The magazine Architecture & Urbanism is published by the OA Department of Architecture at the Historical Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Bratislava in collaboration with the Institute of Art History of the Czech Academy of Sciences, v. v. i. in Prague.

A&U Talks: a discussion format of the Department of Architecture at the Historical Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, which presents current research published in the magazine Architecture & Urbanism to the general public through invited local and foreign guests.
