Prague - After years of delays, Strossmayer Square in Prague 7 has become a pedestrian zone. In recent months, workers have repaved the area, added urban furniture, and greenery. The renovation of the square cost 12.5 million crowns, said Martin Vokuš, the spokesperson for the Holešovice district, today to ČTK.
"Prague 7 has always significantly lacked a relaxation zone for pedestrians where citizens could at least take a few moments to unwind from the surrounding hustle and bustle. I firmly believe that the renovated Strossmayer Square represents a very pleasant Christmas gift for the entire seventh district of Prague,” said Mayor Marek Ječměnek (ODS). The square now also features a decorated Christmas tree.
While cars are no longer allowed in the square, the tram line has been preserved. The lower part of Milady Horákové Street has also been updated. In the future, it is planned to become an urban boulevard.
The reconstruction of Strossmayer Square was planned for many years. The building permit was issued four years ago, but there was never enough money for the actual work. Only this year did the Holešovice district allocate two million crowns for the renovation, and the city hall provided a grant of 10.5 million.
The planned creation of a pedestrian zone was appreciated by President Václav Klaus during his June visit to Prague 7. He also spoke up for the drivers who parked in the square. At that time, district representatives assured the president that new parking spaces would be created in the surrounding streets.
