Prague - The past, present, and future perspectives of the Czech landscape are presented in the Atlas of the Landscape of the Czech Republic, which was introduced today by Minister of the Environment Ladislav Miko. The atlas, which can only be carried under the arm by well-grown adults, weighs ten kilograms and contains 800 maps, 500 extracts, and a large number of graphs. The scales of the maps range from 1:500,000 to 1:300,000. Schools and institutions will receive it.
An interesting feature is the last chapter of the 352-page book titled "Landscape in Art." After hundreds of maps, readers will see key works by Czech landscape painters.
The atlas, which was created based on the Slovak model, involved about 300 experts from a hundred institutions under the leadership of Tatiana Hrnčiarová, who also participated in the preparation of the Slovak atlas. The work lasted six years and cost 55 million crowns, initiated in 2003 by Miko in his position as deputy minister of the environment.
The first interested parties in the unique collection of maps will be able to obtain the atlas starting in January. It will also be available in digital format. Due to the large format of the atlas, measuring 50 by 61 centimeters, the ministry also plans to distribute individual sheets of the atlas, primarily for schools. The atlas will be distributed to primary schools through the founding municipalities. Secondary and higher schools, specialized institutions, all municipalities, and regions are also on the ministry's list of recipients.
According to Miko's estimates, the price of the bound atlas for individual customers will be around 4500 crowns. The ministry is planning a print run of 5000 bound copies and the same number of digital versions.
The work is divided into nine chapters, which gradually uncover the secrets of the Czech landscape. Following the geographical section is a chapter dedicated to the history of the landscape, nature, the present landscape, landscape as heritage, and the space for society.
