Prague – The city council of Prague 7 wants to build a new elementary school for 540 children on Pradelní Street in Holešovice. The school will have two classes of nine grades, each with 30 students. The costs will be in the range of several hundred million crowns. The decision was made today by the councilors of the city district. Construction could start in about two years. The reason for the school's construction is the planned development on Jankovcova Street and its surroundings. Prague 7 operates six elementary schools with two separate facilities.

"It is a location where a large number of apartments are being created and will be created, so it is a suitable place for building a school," said Deputy Mayor Lenka Burgerová (Praha 7 Sobě).

The amendment to the zoning plan that will permit the construction of the school is currently being discussed by the city hall. "This is a long-term investment project that requires a change to the zoning plan and resolution of some property issues and land changes. It is not a plan that can be completed within this electoral term," said Deputy Mayor Pavel Zelenka (Praha 7 Sobě).

The school building is intended to form one of the corners of the block in the future. It will also include a playground and a school cafeteria. "The final design will come from an architectural competition," Zelenka stated.

The city council intends to obtain funds for the construction, for example, from the city hall, which, according to Zelenka, plans to discuss education projects at the November council meeting that will receive funding. The council intends to apply for this subsidy. The district also aims to obtain additional funds from developers who are building or planning developments in the area.

According to the document approved by the councilors, the preparatory work will cost approximately 20 to 25 million crowns. "Based solely on volume estimates, we are looking at construction costs of around 300 to 350 million, but we are calculating at today’s prices,” said Zelenka. Construction could start in two years.

The schools operated by the city district are located in a total of eight buildings with both first and second stages. The capacity is 3,370 places, and at the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year, it is filled to 95.6 percent.
