Ostrava - In Ostrava-Poruba, children, students, athletes, and the public can use three new sports facilities starting in June. Two modern playgrounds for ball games have replaced unsatisfactory sports areas at A. Hrdlička and K. Pokorný elementary schools. After classes, the public can also use the fenced playgrounds for sports. The newly renovated playground at the Poruba Gymnasium of Olga Havlová can be used by students, sports clubs, and disabled athletes, as reported by ČTK. The playgrounds at the two elementary schools have received a plastic surface after reconstruction, allowing students to play tennis, volleyball, handball, and streetball. Benches, lighting, access walkways, and mainly fencing have been installed around the sports facilities. "In the afternoon hours, the playgrounds will also be accessible to the public," said the mayor of the Poruba district, Miroslav Novák. He added that school grounds are more suitable for placing new sports facilities than the Poruba housing estates. "There, groups of teenagers gather, as well as homeless people or drug addicts. Because they are damaging the playgrounds, we will install cameras in the fall that will be monitored by a security agency," the mayor previously told ČTK. He stated that supervision over the sports facilities could cost up to five million crowns. The district paid seven million for the reconstruction of the two school playgrounds, and the ČEZ Foundation contributed two million crowns. At least five hundred students of the Olga Havlová Gymnasium have received their own multifunctional playground after a nine-month reconstruction. The area of 1,000 square meters has a special surface that allows water to pass through and ensures safe movement even after rain. "Students no longer have to walk several hundred meters to the playground in the housing estate," said the spokesperson for the Moravian-Silesian Region, Barbara Odstrčilíková. The region had the sports area built for three million crowns by ArcelorMittal Ostrava. According to the district spokesperson, Petra Špornová, five more playgrounds in Poruba need reconstruction. She estimates that repairs will require nearly 50 million crowns. The district wants to create entertainment parks for small children. For now, they can play at 24 locations equipped with climbing structures, merry-go-rounds, or swings that already meet European standards. "According to the new registry, there are over 400 play elements in Poruba. We will remove some, and repair the functional ones according to European Union standards," added Špornová.
