Ostrava - A new book introducing the establishment of the town hall of Silesian Ostrava will be available in bookstores during May. The publication is part of the planned series Architectural Icons of Silesian Ostrava, which aims to present some architectural landmarks in this district in four volumes, said the book's author Martin Strakoš today to ČTK.
According to Strakoš, many publications have already been released about the architecture of neighboring Moravian Ostrava, while Silesian Ostrava is somewhat overlooked. "In the perception of visitors to the city and the locals, this district is not very appealing, associated with industry," explained Strakoš. He added that the goal was also to create a book that is content-wise and formally of high quality, as there aren't many in the Ostrava region. "Books about some districts are published, but typographic quality or working with letters and images is often neglected, and there are many mistakes," stated Strakoš.
The first book is dedicated to the town hall primarily because it is the central building that has always symbolized the rights and independence of a particular settlement. The book aims to present historical facts and the monument itself to readers in a popular but professionally grounded manner. Therefore, the publication is complemented by a number of photographs, plans, and sketches; for example, it includes a reprint of one issue of the magazine Architectural Horizon with competition designs for the town hall. The next publication should focus on the monument of functionalist architecture - the villa of Eduard Liska. It will document the development of the villa from the end of the 19th century to the mid-20th century.
The release of the first publication, titled The Town Hall of Silesian Ostrava as a Deviating Keystone between Tradition and Modernity, was also financially supported by the local district of Silesian Ostrava. The book will be published in an edition of 500 copies, of which 100 numbered copies will have a metal spine.
