Brno - In Brno, in the Ponava district, the construction of the last of the three new emergency service stations of the South Moravian Emergency Medical Service began today. It is expected to cost around 55 million crowns, said Milan Klusák, the director of the South Moravian rescuers, to journalists today. The work should be completed by this November, so that the first ambulances can start operating from the building at the beginning of next year. New stations have previously been established in Bohunice, where the regional operational center is located, and in Černovice.
The two-story building in the shape of a cuboid will be the largest of the three new stations. The built-up area will be 740 m², and the usable area will be almost twice that. "The response teams should head from the base to the city center, but also to its northern parts and nearby towns. They will also respond on the very busy road I/43 towards Svitavy and in Kuřim," Klusák stated.
In the future, according to him, up to three teams with a doctor and four teams without a doctor could be dispatched from the base during the day. "There will be a crew available for 24 hours each day for the transportation of handicapped newborns. We provide this service in collaboration with the Brno University Hospital," Klusák added.
Once the building in Ponava is completed, the rescuers will be able to permanently leave the emergency station at 28. října Square, from where they often depart into the field during full traffic. According to the governor Michal Hašek (ČSSD), this building in the center no longer meets the conditions suitable for the work of rescuers. "It should rather be a museum of rescue services because it has been in operation since the end of the 19th century," Hašek stated. After vacating, the region will offer the building to other organizations. "However, we assume that no one will want to move in, so we will then offer it for sale," Hašek added.
There are about 150 rescuers in Brno, nearly 550 in the entire South Moravian region. There are over 20 response bases, including an air base in Brno.
