Prague - The development of cities will be the topic of the Urbes 2006 conference convened in Prague on November 21 and 22. According to the organizers, the aim of the meeting is to create a discussion environment to reflect on the current state and developmental trends. Newly elected representatives from Czech, Moravian, and Silesian cities are primarily invited.

According to information from today's press conference, a hundred participants have registered. The conference is expected to be a representative forum for representatives of state and municipal authorities, management and self-governance officials, as well as scientific, academic, and research institutions, associations, and unions.
"We will focus on the context of the radical transformation of our society since 1989, the influx of migrants, the internationalization of the urban environment, and the deepening competition between European cities for resources and influence, historical cores, abandoned or unused areas, residential estates, and commercial and residential spaces in the background of cities," stated sociologist Michal Illner.
However, the conference will also remind participants of the historical tradition associated with the thoughtful and systematic establishment of urban settlement and development by the Přemyslid dynasty. Dozens of cities founded by this ruling Czech family continue to function, develop, and change their functions even after centuries, according to the conveners of the conference.
The focus of the discussions will also be on the revitalization of cities and the style of life within them, ensuring that historic settlements do not become merely commercialized museums.
Using specific examples, experts will seek answers to the current systemic problems of the quality of life for urban residents. Together with representatives from companies in the fields of information technology, railways, the military, developers, and other so-called trend companies, they will discuss the transformations of the character, style, and functions of urban districts. Recognized authorities will present visions for the social, urban, and spatial development of cities in the long term at this forum.
The Urbes 2006 conference is intended as a pilot project aimed at developing essential discussions for the future and providing city representatives with information that would assist them in addressing development plans, finding necessary solutions, and making everyday decisions.
