Students will assist the city architect in mapping buildings

Brno - The Office of the City Architect will map approximately 10,000 buildings in the center of Brno and several other neighborhoods together with 16 students. They will focus on residential and commercial buildings, passages, and many other objects. This will continue last year's mapping of the retail network.

This June, the office conducted a pilot survey in the historical core of the city, and then began to expand into the wider city center at the beginning of the summer holidays. The results will serve as a basis for urban and spatial studies of new developments.

"Thanks to the survey, we will be able to better assess whether the proposed development will appropriately connect to the surrounding area," said city architect Michal Sedláček in a press release.

The students assisting with the survey must first process available statistical data and information. Then they head into the field to verify the information and check and edit the data using a special application on a tablet.

"The data they obtain from maps, for example, may be two to three years old. Some buildings may no longer exist since then, while others are newly constructed," said the survey coordinator and social geographer of the Office of the City Architect Jiří Malý.

Data collection will take the students the entire summer. They need to map approximately ten thousand buildings. The areas they will focus on include, for example, Zábrdovice, the vicinity of the campus, Veveří, and Ponava, as well as the so-called Southern Center. The Office of the City Architect of Brno will then process the gathered information and publish it by the end of the year.
