Ivančice (Brno Region) - The town hall in Ivančice in the Brno region is preparing to renovate the local synagogue from the mid-19th century, which will cost 20 million crowns. Work is expected to start next year. The historical building will regain its original appearance. Following the modifications, a gallery will be created inside, featuring an exhibition on the history of the town. "We will receive professional assistance with the project from the Museum of Brno. We aim to obtain funding for the construction work from various foreign funds," said the mayor of Ivančice, Vojtěch Adam, today to ČTK. He added that the town is struggling with a debt of about 90 million crowns and is therefore unable to bear the full cost of the synagogue's restoration. The former Jewish prayer house previously served as a storage space for exhibits of the Museum of Brno, which held exhibitions in one of its halls. However, the depository moved in recent months to Rajhrad, where the exhibits are now housed in a memorial of literature. Like other synagogues, the one in Ivančice suffered from improper treatment of historical sites during the communist regime. According to experts, completely inappropriate columns were erected in the interior of the building. Its architectural form has also been disrupted by other insensitive modifications. Ivančice's aim will be to restore the synagogue in a manner similar to what has been achieved in the past in Boskovice in the Blansko region or in Břeclav, where it is used for exhibitions and weddings.
