The council of Brno has approved for the fourth time the company that will modernize the incinerator

Brno - The Brno council approved the selection of a company that will gain the contract for the modernization of the incinerator for more than 2.5 billion crowns. The supplier was chosen by the commission only in the fourth tender, all previous tenders were canceled. The winner of the competition will carry out the project for Brno on a turnkey basis, from the project for the building permit to the final adjustments, said the chairwoman of the board of the city company Incinerator and Municipal Waste (SAKO) and councillor Jana Drápalová today.
    The winners of the tender have not yet been disclosed by the councillors. They will do so after announcing the results to all applicants. Three companies participated in the competition.
    The operation of the modernized incinerator is expected to be more environmentally friendly. The flue gases emitted from the new boilers will contain fewer harmful substances, and the slag produced during combustion will be sorted into fractions for various uses, including in construction. The main change will be that the heat generated during waste incineration will be used to produce electricity. A new waste sorting line will also be built on the premises of the incinerator.
    The reconstruction will cost around 90 million euros, which is more than 2.5 billion crowns. The majority of the costs will be covered by the European Union, with a subsidy of 50 million euros, equivalent to about 1.4 billion crowns. Another 425 million crowns will be provided by the State Environmental Fund, and 670 million crowns will come from the city treasury. The remainder will be covered by SAKO through a loan.
    The repairs will be carried out by builders and technologists while the incinerator is operational. The modernized incinerator is expected to serve not only Brno but also the wider region. According to the waste management concept of the South Moravian Region, it should contribute to reducing the amount of waste ending up in landfills.
    The modernization of the incinerator was originally planned to be completed by 2006, but due to repeatedly canceled tenders, it will not begin until the end of this year at the earliest. According to the subsidy agreements with the union, it must be completed by 2010.
