Helena Jiskrová was born in Prague-Radotín and grew up in Liberec. She studied architecture at the Faculty of Civil Engineering at ČVUT, during which she completed an internship in the Netherlands. Upon her return, she was one of the first graduates of the postgraduate internship at the SIAL studio in Liberec.
In 1978, she emigrated with her husband Zdeněk Zavřel and two children to Rotterdam. Professionally, she worked in renowned Dutch studios Van den Broek en Bakema and Bakema Zavrel Architecten and later at Atelier Z – Zavrel Architecten. A significant part of her career was also dedicated to teaching activities – she taught at, for example, the Technical University in Delft, the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, RWTH Aachen, and the Faculty of Architecture in Liberec.
The documentary focuses not only on Helena Jiskrová’s life path but also on specific buildings and projects she designed in the Netherlands. The creators believe that her story has much to offer to contemporary audiences – both personally and professionally.
