Prerov - The Prerov Town Hall wants to build a glass bike parking garage near the main train station. The facility, costing more than eight million crowns, is expected to accommodate up to 120 bicycles, for which cyclists will pay five crowns per day for storage. An extraordinary council meeting was held today regarding this proposal. The land on Husova Street, where the structure is to be built, belongs to Czech Railways, and the city will pay 21,000 crowns per year for its rental. This was reported today by representatives of the Prerov Town Hall. The bike parking garage is to be located in the space between the train and bus stations. "The construction of the bike tower is expected to cost around 8.5 million crowns. If everything goes smoothly, cyclists could enjoy the benefits of the parking garage before the end of 2015," said Deputy Mayor Pavel Košutek (ANO). The building, with glass walls, is expected to be 11 meters high and to accommodate about 120 bicycles. "The cycling tower will feature an automatic self-service system. A cyclist will ride onto a platform, pay five crowns per day, and a special elevator will take and store their bike in the designated compartment. The entire process takes no more than 25 seconds," said councilor Jan Horký. In the rented compartment, cyclists can also store a helmet or luggage. Prerov residents who commute to work by train currently leave their bikes locked at regular bike racks in front of the station. There are dozens of them there daily. Due to concerns about theft, they primarily use older bikes for these trips. In preparing the project, the city drew inspiration from Hradec Králové, where a similar parking garage already exists, according to Town Hall spokesperson Lenka Chalupová.
