Prague will build a floodplain on Rohanský Island for 100 million

Prague - Prague wants to create a flood retention basin on Rohanský Island for 100 million crowns. The green areas designated for the overflow of the swollen Vltava River will cover an area from the current embankment to the Vltava riverbank. This follows from a municipal document available to ČTK. In the future, there should be green spaces and a children's park here. In close proximity, the developer group Sekyra Group intends to build a new urban district.
    The materials for the council's meeting indicate that the contract for the revitalization of the bank of Rohanský Island and the increase of the Vltava's flow has been awarded to a consortium of companies Unistav and Prominecon. The measures are primarily aimed at protecting Karlín and the area around Palmovka from floods. A park with trees, paths, and a water surface will be created. The contract does not include the construction of roads, a children's playground, bridges, and piers. Prague will announce a separate competition for these works.
    Karlín and Libeň were the most affected areas in Prague during the destructive floods in August 2002. They are now protected from a thirty-year flood by a flood embankment that crosses Rohanský Island. Most of the land on Rohanský Island is owned by Prague. According to a longstanding contract, Sekyra Group has a right of first refusal on part of it. The developer intends to build houses, shops, offices, a waterfront, and a park behind the flood embankment. The cost is estimated at 12 to 15 billion crowns. The project is in the phase of territorial proceedings.
