Žamberk - The pedestrian zone in Žamberk will most likely not happen. The closure of Kostelní Street caused such significant traffic problems that the city council is likely to back down from its plans. Similar to Ústí nad Orlicí, the city is considering reducing the speed limit in the area. This was reported by Mayor Jiří Dytrt (ODS) to ČTK.

"From a personal perspective, I say that closing the road would not be appropriate," said the mayor.
The pedestrian zone was supposed to connect the bus station and the road to the church. The city desired a recreation area around the sacred building. However, the road closure caused traffic jams elsewhere. A specialized company will assess whether it will be at least possible to slow down traffic instead of creating a pedestrian zone.
"It could be a one-way street; we could install speed bumps to slow down traffic. But everything will be determined by the survey. Traffic was measured not only in the planned pedestrian zone but also in ten other locations throughout the city to find out where it has shifted," Dytrt said.
The city of six thousand has received a promise of 21 million crowns from European subsidies for new pavement, benches, or drinking fountains. According to the mayor, changes to the project will not jeopardize the funding. The city hall should sign the contract soon and then possibly modify the project.
Likewise, the city hall in Ústí nad Orlicí had to compromise on the pedestrian zone. Smetanova Street will be open to traffic, but at a lower speed. Pardubice wanted to establish a pedestrian zone on Třída Míru. After a campaign by the ČSSD, even the councilors raised their hands for it. However, the city has many other investments, and there is no money for the pedestrian zone. The least problematic pedestrian zone is expected to be in Chvaletice, which will be created thanks to a bypass that will eliminate traffic from the city center.
