Ostrava - The Ostravian district of Nová Bělá will have a new sports hall for approximately 47 million crowns. Construction of the multifunctional sports facility will begin in the spring of 2020. Half of the costs could be covered by a grant from the Ministry of Education's program. This was stated by Deputy Mayor Andrea Hoffmannová (Pirates of Ostrava) to journalists.
In the new hall, basketball players, table tennis players, and tennis players, as well as a karate club, a football club, a volleyball association, a handball team, and the local Junák organization will train. Additionally, children from primary and kindergarten schools will use it for sports in the mornings, while after school children from the after-school clubs will use it. The current gymnasium from the 1970s no longer meets the parameters for many sports, nor does it have adequate equipment or capacity, said the deputy mayor.
She added that the hall will have a universal court measuring 30 by 18 meters, a small auditorium with a capacity of up to 100 spectators, a storage room, a clubhouse, and four changing rooms. The size of the court will allow for sports such as basketball, badminton, volleyball, and table tennis to be played at a professional level. The hall will also be suitable for recreational tennis, handball, floorball, futsal, and other sports.
"We consider the new sports facilities necessary. Nová Bělá has no spaces for training, let alone for organizing tournaments. Once the Sokol sports field is closed in October, there will be nowhere for us to play sports for half a year," said district mayor Lumír Bahr (Novobělské association of the Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia and independent candidates).
Construction of the gymnasium will start in the spring of 2020, and it should be completed in November. The City Hall expects to obtain a grant for the project that will cover half of the costs. The district will contribute 20 million crowns, and Ostrava will cover the rest.
A similar hall began construction in September in the Ostrava city district of Krásné Pole. It will serve educational institutions, sports clubs, and the public. The hall, costing approximately 52 million crowns, is intended for a wide range of sports, such as floorball, indoor soccer, badminton, volleyball, table tennis, and handball. It will also need to be used for aerobics and yoga.
According to Deputy Mayor Hoffmannová, Ostrava intends to build smaller sports halls in other parts of the city as well. Several projects are in various stages of preparation.
