Náchod - The fireworks that took place on Friday evening at the Náchod castle damaged a protected monument. The pyrotechnics exploded uncontrollably, shattering windows and damaging part of the structure, said CTK spokeswoman for the Náchod police Eva Prachařová. The damage is estimated by heritage conservation officials to be at least one million crowns.
"Fortunately, no one was injured during the incident, there are only material damages," stated Prachařová.
The cause of the disaster is being investigated by the police. According to the castle caretaker Jiří Růžička, a spherical bomb that was supposed to explode 100 meters above the ground detonated on the ground. "The damages are serious, the statics of the southwest wing and terrace have been compromised, and windows were destroyed," Růžička told CTK. The fireworks were organized by the Náchod municipality to celebrate the end of World War II. "It is worth considering whether such events should be permitted at monuments," said the caretaker.
