Nový Jičín - Nový Jičín is preparing to transform the banks of the Jičínka River into a recreational zone. A park will be built, allowing passage through the city along the river from the local part of Žilina to the border with the municipality of Šenov near Nový Jičín. Architects have already prepared a study, and in the coming years, the town hall will have project documentation developed and will implement the project in stages. This was announced today by the spokesperson of the Nový Jičín town hall, Marie Machková.

City architect Martin Materna perceives the Jičínka River as an untapped potential. "It is a valuable part of the city with a natural character, which today appears separate and is more of a water feature. The proposed modifications can not only elevate the aesthetic quality of the space but mainly offer an attractive area by the water for the residents of the city," he stated.

After clearing the banks of overgrowth and debris, the architects' study proposes to create a picnic spot, a leisure meadow, community gardens, or a pebble beach by the river. The area around the water is perceived as a whole that should be made accessible to people along the entire flow of the Jičínka through the city.

"After making the banks of the Jičínka passable and building pathways, pedestrians will have a new route for walking, and they will no longer have to divert from the river into surrounding streets. Simple fords will allow crossing the riverbed dry-shod. Seating stairs, lounging decks, public grills, planting an avenue, or placing play elements above the river will provide a place for rest and gathering," said Deputy Mayor Ondřej Syrovátka (Greens).

The city wants to carry out all planned interventions in accordance with flood protection measures and is consulting with the state enterprise Povodí Odry. The city does not own all the land intended for revitalization. "So we are communicating together, and the individual parties are commenting on the plan. All interventions on the riverbank or the placement of furnishings must be carried out in such a way that the flow of water in the riverbed is not reduced," stated Markéta Jánošíková from the city's development and investment department.
