Brno - The title of the best South Moravian building for last year will be contested by, for example, the campus of Masaryk University, the bastion at Špilberk Castle, or the Hlinky interchange. They are among the 39 nominated objects in the South Moravian Region Building Competition 2007. The jury will select the winners in six categories; for the first time this year, South Moravian companies have also entered buildings outside the region, said Rudolf Böhm, director of the National Building Centre, to ČTK today.
Construction companies, investors, and individuals could nominate projects for the competition. The Brno City Hall also nominated its candidates. Overall, interest in the competition is greater than in previous years, when experts selected from about thirty buildings.
Among them were, among others, the campus of Masaryk University and the Faculty of Information Technology complex at VUT. This year, both buildings are back in the competition, as additional parts of them were completed last year. Other Brno objects will also contend for the title. Böhm reminded of the bastion by Špilberk Castle and the Hlinky interchange. Buildings from the regional capital are mostly in the majority each year, with about five or six from outside Brno, the director added.
This year, in contrast to previous years, two buildings will also compete that, although built by South Moravian companies, are located outside the region. These include the reclamation of a landfill in Serbia and a road in northern Bohemia. The jury will decide how to incorporate these buildings into the competition.
Last year, awards were given to, for instance, the terminal at Brno-Tuřany Airport, Brno's central Freedom Square, and the golf course in Jinačovice.
