Náchod - The town hall of the twenty-one thousand inhabitants Náchod is preparing an expensive reconstruction of the central Masaryk Square. The renovation, mainly involving repaving the square and adjusting traffic, is expected to cost between 30 and 70 million crowns. For drivers, the reconstruction will mean a significant reduction in parking spaces in the square. This was stated today by the town hall spokesperson Nina Adlof. “The proposal for the renovation project, which will be one of the largest investments by the city in its property in recent years, has already been approved by the city council,” the spokesperson said. She did not rule out that some parts of the project would still be discussed, such as the number of parking spaces. There are currently around 230 parking spaces in the square, and about 150 should remain. Traffic in the square is also expected to change. It should especially avoid the Church of St. Lawrence in the middle of the square, thereby alleviating its impaired statics. Currently, cars drive very close to this monument. Trees and new features, such as drinking fountains and a functional water pump, should also be added to the square. The fountain will remain in its place. The final costs of the renovation will depend on what type of paving is used in the square and what all the city decides to procure for the square. The renovation of the square, which is currently partly covered by unsightly concrete, could begin next year. It could be completed in 2010. The city would continue its investment following last year's reconstruction of Karlovy náměstí in the city center for about ten million crowns.
