On the northern edge of Brno stands a new lookout tower

Brno - Interested parties can visit the new lookout tower on Ostrá hora in Brno-Soběšice. It is the first structure of its kind in the suburban forests of Brno. The tower offers a view of the northern part of the city and the nearby Moravian Karst. The idea to build the lookout tower came from local enthusiasts, but they ultimately could not raise enough money. The project was then taken over by Brno, which solved the problems.
    "Now we just need to place benches around the lookout tower. Entry is free," said Brno's Deputy Mayor Ladislav Macek to ČTK today. Although the observation tower was built at the end of last year, it was not opened until several months later due to waiting for the completion certificate and handling other official formalities.
    The tower is approximately 12 meters high. It stands near a valuable technical monument, which is the first geodetic point in the territory of former Austria-Hungary on the Strom hill in Soběšice.
    The locals from Soběšice, known as the Soběšice Guard, decided to rebuild the lookout tower that once stood on Ostrá hora when the peak was still uncovered by forest. The construction was originally supposed to be completed in the autumn of 2005. Due to land issues, this did not happen.
    Later, the Soběšice residents found out that the project was beyond their financial capacity. The city of Brno helped by taking over the intention and financing the project, which cost approximately 1.6 million crowns.
