Brno - The Mendel University campus in Brno-Černá Pole has expanded with two new pavilions. One connects the cafeteria, study room, and other facilities, while the other will mainly serve research and education in the field of food technology, fisheries, plant cultivation, or animal husbandry. The total costs amount to 619 million crowns, most of the money was provided by the European Union.
"With the construction of the pavilions, Mendel University gains a modern facility for educational and scientific research activities in biotechnological fields," said Education Minister Petr Fiala to reporters today. Together, the two pavilions offer more than 11,000 square meters of space. There is also room for large aquariums, a school brewery, a malting plant, and a bakery.
Previously, there were four older buildings on the construction site at Drobného and Erbenova streets. Their size and technical equipment did not meet the current requirements for education and research. The university therefore had them demolished. In close proximity stands the modern Pavilion Q, which houses a library, archive, and classrooms. It was designed by the same architectural team.
The pavilion marked X is the new centerpiece of the entire campus. On the ground floor, at ground level, there is a study room and three classrooms. Above, students and teachers have a cafeteria with an organic shape, featuring a glass outer wall and wooden shading slats.
The second pavilion is named after the founder of genetics, Johann Gregor Mendel, and has the shortened designation M. It will host, for example, an institute focused on fisheries. For research and education, it requires aquariums, tanks, and complex facilities for water filtration. The school will also place greenhouses, a small museum, a dissection room, and space for meat production in the building.
