Ostrava - People will have an exceptional opportunity to explore the premises of the former Alexander Mine in Ostrava-Kunčičky with restored heritage buildings on Saturday, September 8th. They will also have a unique chance to climb a metal structure to the 30-meter-high headframe of the Alexander shaft number 2. CTK was informed of this by Jana Dronská, the media representative of the state enterprise Diamo, which is responsible for mitigating the consequences of mining activities.

The Alexander Mine, originally part of the mining assets of the North Ferdinand Railway, was established in 1896 in the village of Malé Kunčice, renamed Kunčičky in 1925. It now forms part of the municipal district of Slezská Ostrava.

"The Alexander Mine was built on greenfield land. The shaft stood out with its so-called castle composition and baroque style even at the time of construction at the end of the 19th century,"
Dronská stated. The construction of the headframe building of the Alexander shaft number 2 was completed in 1901. Coal mining started there in 1898 and ended in 1992, after which the shafts were filled in.

"The buildings, especially the facades, were ornate and featured a lot of architectural elements, many of which have been preserved to this day. According to employees of the state enterprise Diamo, the reconstruction of the headframe buildings in the Ostrava-Karviná region is unique and unrepeatable," Dronská noted. Despite the considerable extent of damage caused by mining activities, according to her, it was possible to return the buildings to their original appearance from 1901 or a very similar state.

The premises will be open to visitors from 10:00 to 16:00. Film screenings and an exhibition of photographs with mining themes, as well as an exhibition of paintings and sculptures borrowed from the National Heritage Institute and mining artifacts from Ostrava's mines, will also be prepared. "For the first time, authentic geodetic instruments and mining compasses will be on display. A competition for children has been prepared to recognize mining objects and to assemble a wooden model of the Michal Mine," Dronská added.
