Liberec will repair the Hübner's tomb, the dominant feature of the Garden of Memories

Liberec - Liberec will restore the tomb of the Hübner family, which dominates the Memory Garden in the former cemetery on Budyšínská Street. The cultural monument is in a state of emergency, and the work on its restoration will take several years. This was stated today by the city hall spokesperson Zuzana Minstrová.
    "The first phase will take place later this year. However, we will only be able to proceed to the next phase once the tomb dries, which will take at least a year," Minstrová said.
    In the first phase, craftsmen will repair the damaged roof, roof trusses, supplement missing stone elements, and also improve drainage for 350,000 crowns. "A soakaway pit will be built to divert rainwater from the new roof to prevent it from further seeping under the tomb structure itself," the spokesperson added. The city hall succeeded in securing a grant of 214,000 crowns from the Ministry of Culture for the first phase.
    The chapel-shaped tomb was built in the early 20th century by the prominent Liberec builder Adolf Hübner, who is also credited with the construction of the church at U Obrázku in Ruprechtice and the church of St. Mary Magdalene. The tomb is located on the site of a cemetery that has been unused for more than half a century in the city center. The city hall began transforming the dilapidated and neglected area into the Memory Garden two years ago. The revitalization of the stonework cost over five million crowns. Additional funds are needed for the restoration of the tombs of the well-known Liberec families Hübner and Liebig. "We want to start discussions with the heritage preservationists about the restoration of the Liebig tomb next year," Minstrová outlined.
    The Memory Garden is not just a reminder of the past; visitors will find literally paved reminders of very recent history within it. In the pathway that winds through the park like a meandering river, there are elements from numerous buildings associated with the history of the city.
