Plzeň - The safety of pedestrians and cyclists in the center of Plzeň is expected to significantly increase with a new footbridge costing 60 million crowns. The construction was approved by the council of the central city district, Mayor Jiří Strobach (ODS) informed ČTK. The footbridge will span four lanes of a first-class road that runs through Plzeň in the direction from Prague to Domažlice and Rozvadov. It will also cross the Mže River and end in Lochotínská Street. "The reason for the construction is the frequent, very dangerous and chaotic crossing of Tyršova Street in the space between the footbridge over the Mže and Sedláčkova or Dominikánská Street, as well as the planned reconstruction of the General Patton Bridge," described the mayor. A decision was made between a permanent structure and a temporary bridge during the reconstruction of the busy bridge that brings traffic from the housing estates in the northern suburbs to the city center. "The council ultimately opted for a permanent footbridge," added Strobach. In addition, the council decided on the construction of two more footbridges. A steel structure that formerly stood at the Southern Suburb railway station will be used for this purpose. "The structure has a span of 25 meters and was dismantled in 2006 during the reconstruction of the intersection," said the mayor. One bridge span will be used to cross the Mže near the zoo, improving the connection between the Lochotín and Skvrňany districts. The second bridge span is intended to cross the Radbuz near the Meditation Garden by Tyrš's Bridge. This will connect the parts of Doudlevce and Výsluní for pedestrians and cyclists. "The estimated costs for both projects amount to nearly ten million crowns," Strobach added.
