Jihlava - The Vysočina Region is donating CZK 200,000 to the National Heritage Institute for rescue work on the damaged roof of the unique church at Zelená hora in Žďár nad Sázavou. The roof was damaged by a storm on Wednesday. The quickly provided regional funds will, according to the director of the NPÚ regional office in Telč, Libor Karásek, be immediately used to secure the property. This will help prevent further million-crown damages to the monument listed on the UNESCO heritage list. This was reported by the region's spokesperson, Jitka Svatošová. "In the case of further rains, the newly restored interior, the organ, the altar, and other original elements and structures will be at risk," the spokesperson stated. The preliminary budget for measures necessary to prevent further damage is estimated at half a million crowns. The storm’s winds removed part of the metal roofing and damaged the truss. The fallen roofing and formwork damaged the church's cloister and around 40 adjacent graves. The wind also broke several trees around the church. The total damage, according to Karásek, amounts to millions of crowns. The Church of St. John of Nepomuk at Zelená hora is one of the peak works of architect Jan Blažej Santini-Aichl. The cornerstone was laid in 1720, and the church was consecrated two years later. The church has a five-pointed star floor plan, which appears in various forms in both the exterior and interior of the pilgrimage site, embodying the intricate symbolism of St. John. In its time, it represented a timeless work with a refined light direction.
