Brno - The South Moravian Region plans to build a new fire station for firefighters at Brno airport in 2016 and 2017. The estimated costs amount to almost 60 million crowns excluding VAT, said Eliška Windová, spokesperson for the South Moravian Region, today to ČTK. The region is the owner of the airport. It leases it to the company Letiště Brno. Its director, Tomáš Plaček, told ČTK today that the firefighters are currently in a firehouse that is no longer suitable.

The region is prepared to invest up to 80 million in the construction at the site of the international public airport over the planned two years. The investment was discussed by the regional council and must also be approved by the assembly. "The construction of a new fire station marks the beginning of a series of projects to enhance the safety of Brno airport," stated South Moravian governor Michal Hašek (ČSSD).
Recently, the number of passengers has increased. In 2002, when the area was taken over by Letiště Brno, the airport handled 157,000 passengers. Over time, the number increased nearly fourfold. The record was in 2011 with almost 558,000 passengers handled. "The airport has been owned by the South Moravian Region since 2004. The growing interest also brought the need for a new check-in terminal, which opened in 2006," added Windová.
According to Plaček, the fire station no longer meets the requirements. "It is morally and physically outdated. As soon as we have a new one, we will use it for additional airport equipment," said Plaček. The airport has more than 20 firefighters.
South Moravian professional firefighters have five stations in Brno. "They are on Lidická Street, at the Exhibition Grounds, by the dam, in Lískovec, and in Líšeň. Every new station and modernization is good and a step forward, whether it is ours or someone else's," said Jaroslav Mikoška, spokesperson for the South Moravian firefighters, to ČTK.
