Prague - The grant committee in Prague has proposed the allocation of 133 million crowns for one-year cultural grants for 2017. The highest support was awarded to the Febiofest film festival, Signal Festival, and Divadlo Semafor. In total, 420 applicants are set to receive funding, according to the material prepared for the culture committee's meeting, which is available to ČTK. The allocation of funds still needs to be approved by the council and the assembly. Overall, Prague expects a total of 350 million crowns for cultural grants, including multi-year ones, for next year.
Both festivals receiving the highest amounts are among the seven selected events that Prague specifically supports. In addition to Febiofest and Signal, these include Prague Spring, Designblok, the United Islands festival, Summer and Winter Letná, and outside the cultural sphere, the Prague running marathon. The city intended to support them directly from the budget, but legislation does not allow this.
Every year, Prague allocates money for one-year and multi-year grants. For the budget next year, 133 million crowns will go towards one-year grants, along with approximately 202 million crowns approved in previous years as part of four-year grants.
The total amount for one-year grants will be divided among theater (46.2 million CZK), music (26.3 million CZK), film (13.6 million CZK), dance and nonverbal arts (13 million CZK), visual arts and photography (12.3 million CZK), literature support (3.5 million CZK), and other projects (19.1 million CZK). The most applications were supported in music (126) and theater (78).
The committee also proposes to support the theater space Jatka78 and Divadlo Na Fidlovačce, which could receive more than four million crowns. Over three million crowns could go to the Strašnice Divadlo X10, the String Fall music festival, and the Prague Metronome Festival. Support is also proposed for traditional events such as Night of Churches, Prague Museum Night, Architecture Day, the Kahmoro festival, and Experience the City Differently.
According to the proposal, the Mezi ploty festival, the Czech Press Photo exhibition, the Rock Café club, and the Franz Kafka Society should remain without support from one-year grants. The Prague Chamber Philharmonic will not receive funding for its tour in America, Divadlo Bez zábradlí for the renewal of furniture and technical equipment in the Adria Palace, the DOX contemporary art gallery for the exhibition of the Jamming project, and the Piána na ulici association for the poetry machine in Jiřího z Poděbrad Square.
