Prague - Today's newspapers are noting the intention of some Prague city councilors who want to prevent the construction of the National Library in Letná. The controversial building designed by architect Jan Kaplický, which has garnered nicknames such as "octopus" or "blob", may have to be relocated outside the center of Prague.

The commentator of Hospodářské noviny (HN) recalls the recent statement by President Václav Klaus that he will defend the construction of the new National Library with his own body. HN points out that it's easy for Klaus to say when he has countless loyal bodies at his disposal - for example, in Prague’s ODS.
"In the case of Kaplický's octopus, things have likely been happening from the start that simply shouldn't be happening. It is quite possible that the selection committee did not evaluate the competitors on the same scale; and it is almost certain that Prague politicians, led by the mayor, are behaving like provincial bumpkins," writes HN. The commentator is annoyed that the rules and agreements are being violated in the case of the library.
Právo reflects back on times long past when architect Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer built the Church of St. Nicholas in the Prague Castle district. Although he placed the baroque structure within sight of the gothic Castle, it was not a problem. On the contrary, modern Kaplický's building near the Castle is a problem - at least for some. "Neither the Emperor nor the municipal officials interfered with Dientzenhofer's work, but everyone is weighing in on Jan Kaplický's little octopus of a National Library. President Klaus does not like it, Prague councilors consider it an abomination, and a cohort of envious Czech architects has also joined the fray," compares Právo.
According to Lidové noviny (LN), two fundamental questions remain the same. Should the National Library be in the center? Should the blob be in Letná? The commentator answers the first question with "yes", and the second with "why not". "Even a conservative who values roots should look back at the tradition of this neglected plain. Letná has always been characterized by experimentation - Sokol gatherings, military parades, football stadiums, circuses. If there is something in the order of Letná tradition, it is the tent, the blob," writes LN.
