The Church wants to renovate the Franciscan monastery in Kadaň for 54 million

Kadaň (Chomutov region) - This year, the restoration of the Franciscan monastery in Kadaň will continue. The town will use its own resources to repair the roof above the main building for 1.6 million crowns. However, the primary investment will be sought by the property owner, the Roman Catholic Church. With the help of subsidies, it aims to repair the interior of the Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary and the Fourteen Holy Helpers, which is part of the monastery, for 54 million crowns. Jiří Kulhánek (ODS), the mayor of Kadaň, informed ČTK about this.

"This will involve repairs to all furnishings, including the organ. Additionally, repairs and restoration of plaster and paintings on the walls, as well as stonework, repair of stained glass windows, and the roof above the church itself. The total amount that the church will request under the IROP program will be 54 million," said Kulhánek. According to him, the church wants to take advantage of the grant call for the restoration of national cultural monuments.

If the grant is successful, the reconstruction would be completed by 2020. The town will assist the church in covering the amount that the church must contribute to this grant, provided that they receive it. Kadaň regularly allocates around 1.5 million crowns annually for the monastery's repairs. "If we are unable to secure the grant, we will of course continue to carry out repairs gradually," the mayor added.

The history of the Franciscan monastery in Kadaň dates back to the 15th century. It was closed in 1950 and slowly fell into disrepair until 1995. After the town long-term leased the monastery from the Litoměřice Bishopric, it was consecrated again and its gradual reconstruction began. Services are still held in the monastery, and the town museum offers visitors three permanent tour circuits. The monastery is a venue for numerous cultural events. Each year, the site is visited by about 3,200 people.
