PRAGUE - Barrandov Studio today began construction of a new studio complex in Barrandov, Prague, in which it will invest more than 100 million crowns. The management of the company expects higher production of both foreign and Czech films from the trio of new soundproof studios, which will cover a total area of 4000 square meters. The construction of the studios will be completed at the turn of this October and November, said Barrandov Studio spokeswoman Dušana Chreneková to ČTK today, according to whom the new Barrandov studio will be the largest facility of its kind in Europe.

"The new studio complex will consist of two studios each with an area of one thousand square meters. The third studio will span two thousand square meters. The complex of three soundproof studios will be interconnected to create a shared studio with a total area of 4000 square meters and a height of 12 meters," Chreneková told ČTK today.
Thanks to the new studio complex, Barrandov Studio will gain not only additional rental space but also a significant competitive advantage, according to Chreneková. "The increase in studio space will enhance Barrandov's ability to allocate more foreign production. The new studios will boost the production of both foreign and Czech films, as well as advertisements," she stated.
While Prague's film studios are no longer the cheapest place for foreign productions to shoot big films, experts say they can still offer quality facilities and good crews, which is a significant competitive advantage.
Foreign producers spend several billion crowns annually in the Czech Republic for shooting films, music videos, and commercials. Although the Czech Republic is one of the most frequent destinations for foreign film crews in the region, experts warn that strong competition is rising in neighboring countries. Filmmakers may prefer to choose Hungary in the future, which offers them tax benefits and intends to invest in film studios as well.
Barrandov Studio, owned by Moravia Steel, is one of the largest studio complexes in Europe. In about 70 years of existence, more than 2500 Czech and foreign films have been produced or participated in their production here. The establishment of the Barrandov film studio is associated with the entrepreneurial Havl family, particularly with the activities of brothers Miloš (1899-1968) and Václav Havel (1897-1979). The construction of the modern film studio, designed by architect Max Urban, began on November 28, 1931.
