The new memorial plaque in Brno honors architect Wiesner

Brno - The monumentally protected building of the Czech Radio studio in Brno on Beethoven Street has recently been adorned with a memorial plaque that commemorates architect Arnošt Wiesner, one of the most prominent representatives of the famous Brno interwar school. The radio headquarters is one of Wiesner's main designs in Brno. The placement of the plaque completed the reconstruction of the facade, said Alena Podlucká from Czech Radio to ČTK.
    The memorial plaque is made of tempered glass. The author is the young Brno designer Zuzana Poloncová. Recently, the builders at the radio also repaired the windows and polished the travertine slabs, which reach up to the first floor. The total costs amounted to about 14 million crowns.
    The five-story building on Beethoven Street was designed by Wiesner for the then Union Bank. The palace was completed in 1925, and the radio moved there in 1950. The rooftop garden was reportedly admired by one of the fathers of modern architecture, Le Corbusier.
    Wiesner was originally from Malacky in Slovakia, and after 1939 he left Czechoslovakia and continued his career in Great Britain. In Brno, projects designed by him include, for example, Morava Palace, a unique crematorium, or the former Moravian Bank at Freedom Square. He also built family houses, the most famous of which is Neumark Villa on Hroznová Street.
