A new biomolecular research center has been added to the University of Toronto campus, designed by the architectural firms Behnisch Architekten and architectsAlliance. The building, which accommodates 400 researchers primarily focused on the human genome, cost 100 million Canadian dollars and is located on the southeastern edge of the campus. It is also situated in a densely built-up neighborhood in the historic center of the city. The structure, which was built on a site that previously served as a parking lot, physically and symbolically connects the academic and medical communities with the city and the ordinary people who live and work in the area. The airy and colorful twelve-story building, surrounded by greenery, incorporates many elements of passive and active energy-saving measures. The project has already won the 2006 RIBA International Award. Info>Photo>
