Football stadium in Portsmouth by H&deM

On April 25, 2007, the project for a new football stadium in Portsmouth by the Swiss studio Herzog & de Meuron was presented. This design further develops the concept that the architects already used for the St. Jakob stadium in Basel. The construction of the football arena will be surrounded by multi-story residential buildings. The complex, costing 600 million pounds, is to be built near the Naval Dockyards and Gunwharf Quays - historical parts of the port city. The project, covering a total area of 93,000 m², will include not only apartments with a sea and harbor view but also shops, cafes, restaurants, and other leisure offerings. There will be a public space between the apartments and the football arena. The outer ring of the stadium slopes inward towards the city to avoid obstructing the view of the harbor. The stadium for 36,000 spectators is expected to be built between 2008 and 2011.
The London office Make has already designed 750 new houses and residential units next to the old football stadium by the harbor. Similar to the new stadium by H&deM, this project will also be realized by the development company Sellar Property Group. Link >
