The skyscraper in downtown Cleveland by architect Marcel Breuer will most likely be demolished. Originally the headquarters of the banking house Ameritrust Bank from 1971, it was merged with Society Bank, which is now part of KeyBank. Since 2005, there have been considerations to build a new administrative complex on the site. The costly reconstruction, removal of asbestos components, low ceilings, and uneconomical layout argue in favor of demolishing the 29-story tower. Instead of a competition, an interview with eleven selected architects will take place on May 31, 2006, from which the future author of the admin center will emerge. Only one architect includes Breuer's building in their plans. The historic building of Ameritrust Bank (arch. George Post, 1908) in the neo-Renaissance style at the base of the skyscraper will, in any case, be preserved. Info>
