PRAGUE - The National Technical Museum in Prague is presenting the work of architects Fritz Schupp and Martin Kremmer, who were among the leading German creators of industrial architecture in the first half of the last century. The exhibition is part of the biennial Industrial Footprints, which started today and will last until September 24 in Prague and Kladno, the organizers told reporters.
Schupp and Kremmer were the authors of the Zollverein mine and coking plant in Essen, which are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The architects first met before World War I while studying in Karlsruhe, and their most famous buildings were created at the turn of the 1920s and 1930s. They constructed a number of industrial facilities in Germany, Silesia, and Serbia.
According to the exhibition organizers, the theme of conversion, that is, the preservation and different use of old industrial buildings, is also relevant in the Czech Republic. The successful conversion of industrial sites in the German Ruhr for cultural activities and tourism can serve as an inspiration for responsible institutions in the Kladno, Most, or Ostrava regions.
This year's biennial Industrial Footprints, which is focused on the conversion of industrial buildings, is being held for the third time. Most exhibitions and accompanying events of the biennial will take place in the Karlín Studios in Prague and Kladno.
Participants in the biennial will learn about the possibilities, meaning, and pitfalls of converting industrial sites on Wednesday and Thursday at a conference in the former sewage treatment plant in Prague's Bubenč, where architects of the exhibited projects will speak.
The exhibition "Symmetry and Symbol" will last until October 23.
