October 7 - October 28, 2008, weekdays from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM (in the building of the former waterworks in Špilberk Park, the headquarters of the Green Administration of the City of Brno) The establishment of Denis Gardens dates back to October 4, 1818, when a ceremonial unveiling of an obelisk took place in the newly adjusted gardens. In the past, the site was a steep rocky hill, called Puhlík, which was gradually taken over by the fortification system. In 1799, 14 stations of the Stations of the Cross were built on its slope, giving rise to the name Calvary for the hill. On the day of its establishment, the gardens were named Františkov, in honor of Emperor Francis, who had his feast day that day. In addition to the obelisk, the park also housed an orangery (today's Colonnade), greenhouses, and a garden gazebo (today's Music Pavilion), as well as an Empire-style well named Fons Salutis at its southwestern foot. The park was fenced, equipped with benches, and guarded by watchmen. In 1919, the park was renamed Denisovy sady after the French historian Ernst Denis, who contributed to the creation of an independent Czechoslovakia. In 1941, the park was divided into two parts by the extension of today's Husova Street, and the lower part was named Studánka. The last major modifications before the ongoing reconstruction took place in 1961, when, among other things, a café with a summer and dance terrace was built, along with an upper connecting path that opened panoramic views of the southern part of the city. Since 1996, the park area has been managed by the public organization Municipal Green of the City of Brno. In 2000, it was expanded by two Capuchin terraces and a gradual reconstruction is underway, which has received several awards.
The Municipal Green of the City of Brno, which manages the park, has prepared an exhibition titled DENISOVY SADY 1818 - 2008 for the 190th anniversary of the park's establishment, which maps the past and present of the park. Through maps, plans, images, and photographs, it will showcase the gradual development of the park, its reconstruction, and what it looks like today. Visitors to the exhibition can also expect several surprises.
The exhibition will take place in Špilberk Park, in the building of the former waterworks (the headquarters of the parks and tree rows administration). It will be inaugurated with a vernissage on October 7, 2008, at 3:30 PM and will last until October 28, 2008, when a lyre-shaped tulip tree will be ceremoniously planted in Denis Gardens at 2:00 PM. The tree will be planted on the occasion of the anniversary of the park's founding and the celebrations of the day of the establishment of the independent Czechoslovak state. The exhibition will be open on weekdays from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
If interested, it is possible to arrange a guided tour of the exhibition.
